Crowd for ClijstersFila at The Championships
The 2010 Wimbledon Championships brought a fortnight of tennis
with no rain interrupted play for the first time since 1995, and
the Queen visited the event for the first time since 1977. There
were many memorable moments, but most notably, the longest match in
history took place in the first week, out on court 18, which lasted
over eleven hours, a record that is likely to never be beaten along
with many other records that were broken throughout the course of
the match between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut.
Fila players had mixed successes, but the highlight was in the boys
singles, when Marton Fucsovics became the first Hungarian boy to
lift the Junior Wimbledon crown as he triumphed over Benjamin
Mitchell in a close two set match, eventually winning 6-4, 6-4, to
capture his first major boy's title. Fucsovics joins the list of
great players such as Roger Federer, Ivan Lendl and Stefan Edberg
who have also made their mark in the junior event.
Mark Woodforde also took home a title, along with partner Pat Cash,
in the Senior Mens Invitational Doubles, to add to all the many
Wimbledon doubles titles that he won during his professional
playing career. Woodforde and Cash defeated Bates and Jarryd in the
final, in straight sets.
Other Fila players had some great results in the various events,
but were unable to progress through to the final stages. Kim
Clijsters had a great win over compatriot, Justine Henin, but lost
out in the Quarter-Finals to eventual finalist, Vera Zvonareva.
Fabio Fognini knocked out Fernando Verdasco, seeded eighth, in the
first round, but was later knocked out before progressing to the
last 16. Chris Eaton, and partner Dominic Inglot had a grear result
in the mens doubles, defeating number one seeds, and defending
champions, Nestor and Zimonjic.
Fila footwear was abundant on the court - not only were all the
Fila players wearing the shoes, but all the ball crew and court
coverers. Fila are the official footwear licensee to The
Championships, Wimbledon, and shoes were proving very popular in
the Wimbledon Shop, especially this year's new addition, the baby
'crib' shoe. To view the range please click here
2010 will be a year to remember at The Championships, but 2011
will see two very special anniversaries celebrated. Next year will
be the 125th anniversary of The Championships, and Fila
will be celebrating its centenary.
